Donald Trump may have bought a gun at a campaign stop in South Carolina. Under 18 U.S.C. 922 (n), it is currently illegal for people under federal indictment to buy guns*. Will Trump be charged with violating this law -- or a different law, as a direct consequence of purchasing a gun -- before January 1, 2025?
(By "as a direct consequence", I mean that -- in my subjective judgment -- he would not have been charged with the crime had he not purchased a gun.)
*The provision states: "It shall be unlawful for any person who is under indictment for a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year to... receive any firearm or ammunition which has been shipped or transported in interstate or foreign commerce." It's unclear to me what "which has been shipped or transported in interstate commerce" means here.
