does he strongly want to trade a shoe?

@Bayesian Jack was quoted saying "Jack was quoted saying "I'm medium regular on it. Not strong either way"."

@Alex what about... john?

@Bayesian John was quoted agreeing with Jack

@Alex agreeing with jack about jack being quoted saying this, or about what jack said in the quote jack said he said?

@Bayesian the inner (or diegetic) Jack was being referred to by the outer (real) Jack as though they were the same thing. Jack also refers to John.

@Alex Should a swap of shoes between the real and diegetic Jack count?

@EricBolton I'm not sure if diegetic Jack meets the "personhood" criteria.

@Alex "someone else"

@Alex What is the threshold of computational complexity past which a diegetic character attains personhood?

@EricBolton I think the question is confused. There is no threshhold past which a character becomes a person; instead, the character can have a continuous range/degree of personhood. By all accounts, diegetic jack is quite person-y, but less so than his person-self.

@Bayesian Surely it’s a bit of an S-curve though. Maybe we can use the ole’ “would a reputable news organization declare diegetic Jack to be a person?” trick

@EricBolton Everything's a bit of an S-curve, but the "a bit of" does all the work. I agree that a reputable news organization declaring diegetic Jack to be a person would be sufficient, though not necessary, for him (it? depends on their ultimate answer) to be a person.
