The Chronicle annually ranks the larstest US charatible donors. In 2022 it was Bill Gates; in 2021 Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates, jointly; in 2020 Jeff Bezos.

This list has some oddities: "The Chronicle counts only gifts that donors make to organizations with charity or foundation status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code."

"Some of America’s biggest donors don’t appear on the current Philanthropy 50 even if they have made a big gift to a nonprofit last year. That’s because the Chronicle’s rankings count multiyear pledges only once, as a lump sum in the year the commitment was made."

This later consideration has bumped Warren Buffett from the list in the past.

Who will top the list for 2023?

To keep things simple, for joint winners, the first name listed by the Chronicle will be the selected answer choice; e.g., "Bill and Melinda Gates" and "Bill Gates and Melinda French Gate" will both resolbe as "Bill Gates"; BUT "Melinda French Gates" or "Melinda and Bill Gates" will resolve to "Melinda French Gates".

(Please note that it may take a month or so into 2024 for the results to be released.)
