Background
On June 9, 2025, President Donald Trump suggested that Governor Gavin Newsom should be arrested, citing alleged obstruction of federal immigration enforcement efforts. This statement followed remarks by Trump's border enforcement official, Tom Homan, who threatened to arrest individuals hindering immigration enforcement in California, including Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. Both officials had previously criticized Trump's decision to deploy National Guard troops to Los Angeles amid ongoing protests. In response, Governor Newsom condemned Trump's comment, stating that it marked a dangerous shift toward authoritarianism and emphasized the importance of upholding democratic norms, regardless of political affiliation.
