Will Joe Biden and Xi Jinping conduct “Panda Diplomacy?”

Resolved
YES

This week the pandas at the National Zoo in Washington DC were returned to China. This is the result of increased tensions between the US and China. Next week President Biden and President Xi are reportedly meeting in San Francisco on the sidelines of the APEC Summit in an attempt to warm relations between our countries. Both countries have said they set a low bar for the outcome of the meeting. One possibility is that the two countries agree to return pandas to the National Zoo as a good faith effort to restore normalcy to the relationship and begin to repair the friendship.

The question will resolve YES if China agrees to send pandas back to Washington.

The APEC Summit is Nov 15-17. The question concludes Nov 14 to prevent sniping.

Very nicely done, @steve and @Javier. I was about to buy this up before I realized the market was closed.

@CivilizedGuy a question: if this announcement is as far as it goes, and no pandas end up arriving, how are you going to view this resolution?

My concern is that Xi has 'hinted' or 'suggested' this will happen rather than 'promised' it.

@JoshuaWilkes I reviewed several news sources and all seem to indicate that it is likely to happen. It’s unfortunate that Xi did not make a definitive statement on the return of the pandas. The question required China to “agree to send” pandas. I don’t want to leave the question open for weeks or months waiting for the arrival of pandas.

Diplomacy is never clean. What would you do?

@CivilizedGuy if I was in your shoes on balance I'd probably resolve YES but I wouldn't want to.

It would be better if Manifold made it easier to leave a question open like this for months before resolving, either through a more patient culture or through some new functionality.

Cannot believe this market already exists 🤣

(I was about to create one similar)
