Background
Ohio State is the defending national champion, while Miami made its College Football Playoff debut with a 10-2 regular season record and earned its first College Football Playoff victory with a 10-3 win against Texas A&M. Ohio State finished the regular season 12-0 before suffering their first loss in the Big Ten Championship Game against Indiana.
Ohio State leads the all-time series 3-2, with the teams last meeting on September 17, 2011 when Miami won 24-6. Ohio State's last postseason victory over Miami came in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl national championship game, 31-24 in double overtime.
Considerations
Ohio State opened as a 9.5-point favorite, with the line immediately dropping to 8.5 points. Ohio State's quarterback Julian Sayin is a Heisman Trophy finalist with an FBS-best 78.4% completion percentage and throws to elite receivers Carnell Tate and Jeremiah Smith. Miami generated just 278 yards of total offense against Texas A&M and faces a difficult challenge against Ohio State's defense.
