It has been reported that the GOP are planning to pass a significant piece of legislation within a single reconciliation package. This would include a large portion of Trump's proposed legislative agenda for his first year in office and it would renew Trump’s 2017 tax cuts which are due to expire this year.
According to The Hill:
"Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) told House Republicans on Saturday that President-elect Trump wants to pass one reconciliation package, a strategy that runs counter to the two-bill effort several other GOP lawmakers have been pushing for."
"The Republican trifecta — taking full control of the White House and both chambers of Congress in the 2024 election — is looking to use the process to bypass Democratic opposition and pass many of its priorities."
Will the Republicans successfully pass a single reconciliation package and will it be signed into law by May 1, 2025?
The question will resolve to "Yes" if a single reconciliation package is passed and signed into law before May 1, 2025. Otherwise it will resolve to "No".
The package considered for resolution of this question requires a bill which satisfies the following criteria:
Addresses at least 3/4 of the following issues in a substantive way:
Border Security. Funding or policies related to border infrastructure, personnel, or immigration enforcement.
Defence Spending. Increases or adjustments to discretionary or mandatory defence funding.
Debt Ceiling. Changes to the statutory debt limit, mechanisms affecting it, or elimination.
Federal Regulations. Legislative changes to reduce, increase or eliminate regulatory requirements.
AND:
Taxes. Adjustments to federal tax rates, brackets, or related policies (e.g., renewal of Trump's 2017 tax cuts).
