What is Newstag?

Newstag is a side project I've been working on.

It aims to be the go to platform for understanding what is happening in the world.

Currently, it's primarily focused on enhanced discovery of prediction markets

My algorithm uses vector embeddings, allowing exploration and linking of diverse content (tweets, news, predictions) based on semantic relevance.

As opposed to something like X/Twitter the algorithm uses new tech unlocked by advancements in AI to better understand the goals of the user and allow him to specify through chat like interface what he cares about. So unlike the "for you" page on X, where you just end up seeing videos maximizing for engagement (cats, content trying to elicit anger, made up or exaggerated stuff) here you will see content that is designed to accurately inform you in your specified areas relevant to your goals.

Just to be clear the algorithm I'm talking about is not just a ChatGPT wrapper. It is something I've been working on for my startup, and this is just part of testing it out in other space.

Right now users can also construct areas they wanna track or spaces.

How does this resolve?

The features that I will decide to work on will resolve YES. You can give me feedback in the comments on which features you think are important and by doing that make certain features more or less likely implemented by me (therefore resolving in the direction intended by you) alternatively you can also suggest new features.

I intend to put around 40h towards it this month. Each feature has a time estimate on how long it will take to implement. Therefore the features that will resolve YES should sum up to around 40h.

I will not bet.

You can check out the latest deployment here: https://newstag.app

This is a very early alpha so expect bugs and or missing features, but also expect significant improvements over time.

Very likely features (from my perspective)

- add context on probability update causes to the feed (tweets, potentially Manifold comments etc)

- signing with Google

- tracking daily probability change (basically making the feed show changes more and the things the user doesn't already know)

- option to make space public

  • Update 2025-05-15 (PST) (AI summary of creator comment): The creator has confirmed that a version of the Real-time market updates feature has been implemented:

    • Specifically, all binary markets are now in sync with Manifold.

    • This task took 3 hours to complete (revised from an initial estimate of 5 hours for a broader real-time updates feature).

    • This implemented feature and its 3-hour duration will count towards the approximately 40 hours of work that will determine which features resolve YES.

  • Update 2025-05-16 (PST) (AI summary of creator comment): The creator has confirmed that the feature 'Allow users to make their constructed spaces public and explore spaces created by other users' has been implemented.

    • This task took approximately 4 hours to complete (revised from an initial estimate of 5 hours for this feature).

    • This implemented feature and its 4-hour duration will count towards the approximately 40 hours of work that will determine which features resolve YES.

  • Update 2025-05-19 (PST) (AI summary of creator comment): The creator has provided an update on the feature 'Track probability change per day (or some other time period) and allow for filtering by it':

    • This task took 5 hours to complete. This is an increase from the initial estimate of 3 hours, as the creator noted it "Took 2 hours longer than expected".

    • This 5-hour duration will count towards the approximately 40 hours of work that will determine which features resolve YES.

I plan on doing this today.

Resolves YES.

Just testing Manifold comment websocket.

Renaming to "Newstag"

This is something that is planned if the platform shows potential but right now it seems like to soon and too difficult.

I'm already satisfied with the current UI and UX but I got used to it during development and it may be difficult for people to use.

Could be an easy quality improvement and also prevent bot accounts and save me time by not implementing email verification. So kind of likely.

This was painful.

Checkpoints seem to reflect more the idea of what it actually is. But at the same time checkpoints kind of represent a past point in time when one had less progress so idk.

Isn't a priority right now but maybe someone can change my mind.

Seems very likely. This will be needed in order to make the feed display things that the user doesn't already know by adding option to filter by it. A.k.a the updates happening in the world.

Took 2 hours longer than expected.

Should be pretty easy to implement and might significantly improve the quality of the feed if one doesn't have to spend time designing their own areas. Could also allow for kind of meta discovery for interesting things happening in the world.

@patrik Done. Took around 4h.

Right now seems like a distraction. If I can scrape every 3h or so it's already relatively up to date. But Manifold provides a nice API for subscribing to changes so might be an easy improvement, definitely will be needed if I decide to implement direct betting in the platform.

@patrik Ended up being easier than expected. Manifold API is awesome! Therefore took 3h instead of 5 and now all binary markets are in sync with Manifold.

This seems very likely. The goal is to find a way to combine both prediction markets and explanations of causes to the probability updates in one feed.

@patrik Testing manifold comment websocket.
