I like your question! This is Neutral. First of all, not enough context. Have both parents become quadriplegics? Second, The world is overrun with people already, so they are not helping. Third, intelligence and looks are genetically associated factors, but the ability to provide love, inspiration, security, hope, faith, and thoughtful insight into the world are far more important in the raising of children.

@PGeyer I don't think there's such a thing in the present day as Earth being overrun by humans. Earth could happily trillions of positively net-contributing humans.

@jim You trust in Roko; I’ll trust in boring old science (and “crackpots” like E.O. Wilson). As my Dad used to say, all he wanted was some unspoiled land where he could go rabbit hunting. At some point, for everyone, population density becomes a quality of life issue. Unless you’re talking about populating the galaxy. If you’re limited to Earth, limited to about 36 billion acres of land, your trillions of people will have over 100 people per acre for every acre of land on earth, even the sandy and icy ones.

Manhattan has just over 100 people per acre. I enjoyed living in NYC, but not everyone does. You’re suggesting everyone will eventually accommodate to every place on earth being NYC’s density. NYC dwellers could not survive without a little help from truckers coming from…not NYC. As an aside, NYC (due to its over-density) is incredibly inefficient. The tax rate proves that. An Earth of NYCs has no recourse to truckers, since it is all NYCs all the way down ;)

@PGeyer E.O. Wilson is cool. But as Roko points out we have room for quadrillions. Everyone can have much greater living space than they currently have, and we can have E.O. Wilson style "half Earth" at the same time!

If one builds 300,000 storeys of continuous structure on all the land on earth, one gets about 50 trillion square kilometers of living area. This is enough for each of 10 quadrillion people to have 5000 square meters (about 50,000 square feet - that’s the size of a mega-mansion) to themselves. This could include artificially lit interior wilderness spaces with artificial skies, artificial weather etc that are maybe 10-20 storeys high, and with the significant advantage of being less crowded, safer, having better and more predictable weather and being easier to get to than wilderness we have today.ᵈ

This but with fewer people and only covering half the Earth

@jim Are you figuring that we’ll be building a lot more in three dimensions over time, cuz I love Santorini, and their real estate law considers all three dimensions, being in a caldera with stadium seating for everyone. I’ll burn my luggage if that is where you’re putting me! Count me in

Are all of the kids going to have good lives?
