It’s a step on the path of starting the social media/banking/everything company that Musk has wanted to make ever since the PayPal days, with the added benefit of X million daily users already being there. The name change is a way to do the “clean break” of starting a “new” website.

Tiktok used to be called musical.ly now no one remembers that name. Tiktok might just be a better more fun name. Maybe they had some other reason to change their name. But no one remembers the old name. People will probably remember the name twitter for a while, but eventually x will just become the name everyone is used to.

In the mean time it will bring the website some publicity and as Matthew has said if Musk wants to create a unified website for everything x is a great name.

Also if he just changes the name back to twitter in a week, he got free publicity and no one was harmed and he can say it was just a joke.

Everyone still uses "twitter" and some people use "X" when talking about it, all it did was made us talk about it, it's a marketing move.

Also, Paypal (Elon's first business) used to be called X, I don't remember the story now but basically he wants a redemption arc of sorts where he can make Twitter his X

X is a financial platform, Elon is now also planning to add financial features into X using crypto etc, so there you go.
