Will I delete my Manifold account before June 2023?

YES

There are some things that I really don’t like about the current state of Manifold Markets. At the moment I’m still enjoying the platform, but I can see a future where I’m so annoyed that leaving is my best option.

I could take a break instead of deleting my account, but where’s the fun in that. I’ll probably buy some Pizza with the Mana I have left, maybe charity, I’ll think about it.

Your account isn’t deleted?

What annoys you or might annoy you about manifold?

@ian I don’t like that assassination markets are allowed. It feels like I’m one of very few people on this site that care about that. That makes sense to me considering that manifold is still young and has not hit the mainstream yet. But if it does, I’m worried that things like death markets will be off-putting to new users. And then I’m still alone with my opinion.

I’m definitely not an expert, but it would make sense to me intuitively that the markets would be more accurate if opinions are accurately represented.

Another thing that annoys me is that you can exchange Mana for other currency. In combination with assassination markets that just feels weird to me. But that’s not my main problem.

I’m very happy you got rid of tips (and bounties?), but manalinks are a way bigger problem. (People also told me markets can also be used to transfer money directly, without being detected, which I don’t understand yet.)

David told me some time ago that you still had to discuss the subject internally. But seeing that your “What is Mana (M$)?” page still says “It cannot be converted to fiat (cash)”, it not being true and me having told him about that, feels like I’m being ignored.

There are some other smaller things, but this reply is already way too long.

But at the moment I’m having enough positive experiences that suppress my bad feelings.

@enemel What are the positive experiences or things that you're gaining from using Manifold? What would you like to see more of or have us focus on?

predicted NO

@ian I can match my opinions with those of others, find new things that interest me, and sometimes there are things that I just find amusing. It feels good to be right and doesn’t feel as bad being wrong because mana is still coming in through rewards. And if I lose too much money I can probably think of an interesting market and get new trader bonuses.

Mostly the site is developing in what feels like a good direction to me. But I see a risk of unwanted consequences from lack of moderation/restrictions. Here are two things I’m worried about:

  1. New “weak” players leaving because they don’t like the community. Maybe they don’t like people betting on the death of a person they like. Maybe they bet on a market they didn’t read the description of (a point I didn’t make, but I think markets like my Destiny death market should probably get a warning sign to signal that you have to read the description). Or maybe they are simply robbed which could get a more regular occurrence if

  2. People create a black market for mana. Some people tried, not sure if seriously, but the community is probably too small at the moment. I think that would be a big problem because your site would lose its main selling point (and because there would probably be more fraudulent markets and maybe legal stuff).

By the way I think I understand more about the problem with markets now and why they might be unfixable. I could not think of a complete solution to that problem yet. That’s something I would like you to maybe put more focus on. If you did that already and there really is no fix, I apologize. Then I can only hope that I’m wrong.
