Ok. Investigating this was already worth it (mostly read the comments to the reddit post) just for learning more about colossal squids (https://old.reddit.com/r/slatestarcodex/comments/mbww69/a_reasoned_case_for_bigfoot/). I knew these existed, but it hadn't occured to me how damn common they must be so that we actually come across them once in a while. The deep see is a weird place.
