Affinity is high-end software for visual design, long a minor competitor and alternative to Adobe products. But something is afoot!
News is dropping Oct 30th, but what is happening is unclear. What we know so far:
Canva bought Serif (Affinity) in 2024
Affinity used a single-purchase licensing model, but Canva is addicted to that subscription revenue
Serif has closed off all new purchases of their Affinity products as of early October, citing their "big changes"
iPad versions of Affinity 2 products were released for free download on the App Store
Canva is reportedly preparing for an IPO
Feel free to add more answers if you'd like, I'll resolve as best as I can after the announcement drops in a couple days. This is closing a day early so I can add reasonable liquidity to make a short fuse market worthwhile.
Definitions (to be expanded if needed)
"pure subscription model": pay monthly/quarterly/yearly/etc. for license; access cuts off when subscription does
"perpetual fallback subscription model": pay yearly (usually, but not exclusively) for license; access to new updates cuts off when subscription does, but retain perpetual access and license to the older versions of the software
