Affinity is high-end software for visual design, long a minor competitor and alternative to Adobe products. But something is afoot!

News is dropping Oct 30th, but what is happening is unclear. What we know so far:

  • Canva bought Serif (Affinity) in 2024

  • Affinity used a single-purchase licensing model, but Canva is addicted to that subscription revenue

  • Serif has closed off all new purchases of their Affinity products as of early October, citing their "big changes"

  • iPad versions of Affinity 2 products were released for free download on the App Store

  • Canva is reportedly preparing for an IPO

Feel free to add more answers if you'd like, I'll resolve as best as I can after the announcement drops in a couple days. This is closing a day early so I can add reasonable liquidity to make a short fuse market worthwhile.

Definitions (to be expanded if needed)

  • "pure subscription model": pay monthly/quarterly/yearly/etc. for license; access cuts off when subscription does

  • "perpetual fallback subscription model": pay yearly (usually, but not exclusively) for license; access to new updates cuts off when subscription does, but retain perpetual access and license to the older versions of the software
