For those coming in later, Zohran said something along the lines of how he appreciates trump for not turning it into a fight.
Appreciation of a behaviour is pretty clearly not a compliment and does not imply general appreciation for the person or an attribute.
Mamdani has not complimented Trump -politeness must not be mistaken for compliments.
Mamdani refrained from making any statement that qualifies as compliment under the market rules. Politeness or basic civility does not constitute a compliment or endorsement. The rules clearly state that only an explicit positive evaluation of Donald Trump - personally or professionally - qualifies.. (Polymarket)
1 . The Distinction Between Respecting the Event vs Complimenting the Person
Respecting the meeting itself his own attendance or the "spirit" of the gathering does not count . The criteria require that Mamdani must compliment Trump personally. Trump praising Mamdani is irrelevant the burden is on Mamdani to offer the praise to qualify for a "Yes".
2. Direct Criticism - No Compliments
Throughout the event Mamdani did the opposite of complimenting Trump: When answering a question regarding Gaza Mamdani criticized the US administration and argued that New York taxpayers' money was being used to support genocide by the Israeli government. He made this point directly while standing next to Trump. This is a critique of policy, not compliment for the man
3 . Context of the "Fascism" Comment
When attempting to answer a question about fascism Mamdani started to clarify that he was referring to a policy agenda or political tendency rather than labeling Trump himself a fascist. But Trump promptly interrupted during this exchange. So at no point did Mamdani offer a positive evaluation. While Mamdani may have smiled when Trump was "love bombing" him looking for reciprocity he did not return the praise.
@1bets this is true, however there is a clear incentive for the people who mostly voted in favor of this, so we'll see.
