I will ask on my upcoming Manifold Survey, with the following options:

  • Plasma Ballin''s (two apostrophes)

  • Plasma Ballin's (one apostrophe)

  • Plasma Ballins (the apostrophes cancel out)

  • Plasma Ballin"s (apostrophes unite to form a quotation mark)

  • Other

Resolves to the plurality choice.

See Plasma's Manifold Survey for other questions about the survey.

Manifold takes an official position:

@JosephNoonan The correct position

@Logaems The correct set of rules about how to make a possessive form in the English language can be found in the following comment.

@Logaems For what it's worth, I strongly disagree with this "rule". I believe in the following:

  • Alice's (standard rule to add 's)

  • The dogs' (add apostrophe on its own because it's a plural that ends in "s")

  • Santos's (add 's if it ends in an "s" but isn't a plural)

@Fion Thanks for the clarification, I was factually incorrect.

@Logaems The standard English rule for singular possessives is to add 's, but couldn't it just as well be stated that it's a standard English rule that you never have two apostrophes in a row? The question is which rule wins out in this situation.

@Logaems I don't think the rule was factually incorrect, just outdated. As I understand it, both rules are sometimes used, but the rule you stated is falling out of favor with the rule Fion stated becoming favored. You can still occasionally find people following the old rule.

Chillin‘s latest single “Songs“ is a soulful and introspective track that showcases the artist’s vocal range and songwriting abilities. The song is a departure from Chillin’s previous work, which was more straightforward R&B with pop hooks. “Songs” is a slow-burning ballad that builds to a powerful climax, with the wonderful voice soaring over a lush instrumental arrangement. The lyrics of “Songs” are deeply personal, Chillin’ is an acoustic trio, a little on the older side they are singer/songwriters with an original sound.  https://prettywhite.co/chillin-a-journey-through-different-music-genres-and-styles/

Plasmas’ballin’s’es’

Not sure if this has any implications for this

I would usually write "Plasma Ballin'"'s.

@Mira Ah yes, possessive forms of quotations, a way to make it even more cursed.

By analogy to governors general, I think the correct answer is Plasma's Ballin'.

@tfae I should have made this one where I can add additional options, I like this one.

Plasma' Ballin' s'

The quotation mark is a terrible option, I love it

I commit to voting for that one
