I am going for Trump is the same.

NYT:

WSJ:

MILWAUKEE—Donald Trump, five days after narrowly escaping an assassin’s bullet and with his Democratic rival’s candidacy in crisis, accepted the GOP’s nomination Thursday in a speech that described in detail the attempt on his life, while painting the nation as deeply troubled and offering himself as the solution.

“I stand before you this evening with a message of confidence, strength, and hope,” Trump said as he accepted his party’s nomination for a third consecutive time. “I am running to be president for all of America, not half of America, because there is no victory in winning for half of America.”

Trump spoke in gripping, emotional terms about the shooting, and spent the early portion of his speech asking for a divided nation to find common cause.

But as the address went on, wandering on and off script, he stuck closely to his familiar style: casting illegal immigration as a threat to U.S. jobs, portraying criminal indictments against him as political retribution and insulting political rivals, including “Crazy Nancy Pelosi.”

While advisers have encouraged him not to speak so much about the 2020 election, Trump couldn’t resist and touched on that and other items from his greatest hits in a speech that lasted more than 90 minutes.

Axios:

MILWAUKEE — The "new" Donald Trump soothed and silenced the nation for 28 minutes last night. Then the old Trump returned and bellowed, barked and bored America for 64 minutes more.

I think this should definitely count as a change in tone - the market is irrational to me. His speech was really long, and so people are focusing on the latter part, which was the same. But the first part - talking explicitly about unity (and how he’ll be a president for all Americans, including Democrats) and his assassination attempt - was a clear change in tone. If he changed in tone for some of the speech but not all of it, that’s still a change in tone.

Let’s see still criticizing Nancy Pelosi, lying about the Department of Justice and the current administration, lies about the border and crime, saying the election was rigged and stolen, praising foreign dictators and the fictional serial killer Hannibal Lecter all just as he’s done previously… ya I would say it’s more of the same.

"Trump’s speech mostly resembled his stump speech, after he described Saturday’s assassination attempt in vivid detail. Even as his tone sounded different from his rallies, his message was similar."

https://www.wsj.com/livecoverage/rnc-trump-speech-biden-election-2024

"Donald Trump opened with a message of unity, before switching tone and covering familiar territory including immigration and crime."

"In a speech that ran for more than an hour and a half, the Republican nominee spoke in hushed tones as he described at length the shooting he survived in Butler, Pa., last weekend, his first public speech since the assassination attempt. He did veer into familiar partisan attacks and insults, labeling Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, the former House speaker, “crazy,” and lashing out at the man who defeated him in 2020, President Biden.

But he tried to fall back on calls for unity."

https://www.cnn.com/politics/live-news/rnc-republican-national-convention-07-18-24/index.html

"Lengthy speech: In his speech, the longest convention address in modern American history, Trump began with a call for unity as he recounted details from the attempt on his life last week. He then went on to outline key campaign promises on the economy and the border, while repeating false claims in an off-script address."

Honestly, I think this could go either way, especially since he said he will resolve the market on his own judgement.

I think it was a change in tone even if it wasn't a major one. I think he only mentioned the 2020 election claims once or twice compared to him usually harping on that topic

Its a toss up for sure

I didn't hear anything new. Apart from his "ears bleed more than any part of the body" story, all of the content was from previous speeches.

Anyone know is there a market for what will be said in the speech? Search came up empty

If he says the word "unite" or "together" – I would call that change

"national unity"

It might appear conciliatory but I personally believe he's the same guy and any change in tone is for personal gain and not genuine

Trump will definitely have the opportunity to speak about uniting against political violence.

The GOP platform for this year also has some changes, mostly to align with Trump’s priorities:

  • Leaving abortion laws for the states (previous platforms long called for national restrictions)

  • No bans on same-sex marriage (protect institution of marriage in general)

  • No income tax on tips for service workers

  • Less interventionism

It’s not a shift from the right, though the platform does call for “uniting the country” which Trump will probably at least allude to

I'd watch the "Fight, Fight, Fight" guy singing Kumbaya for about 5 seconds before I switched the channel.

For priors - what is your general opinion of Trump, and how would you describe his behavior thus far in this campaign?

He has been inflammatory, but he has been reducing the level of inflammation over time. I was positively surprised by his debate performance.
