Entry to Medicine in Ireland is determined by a combination of Hpat + Leaving certificate points. As of this year, that is via a adjusted sum, with maximum Leaving Certificate points dampened (every point over 550 counts as 1/5th a point, so the LC maximum of 625 is counted as an adjusted maximum of 565).
Hpat tends to be ~ mean 150pts s.d ~20 points. These two values are then added. There is good historical data for the expected points for various medical courses.
NEXT YEAR THE SYSTEM CHANGES
Next year, the Hpat will be adjusted to be mean 75 and sd~10. And Leaving Certificate points will be counted raw.
This "more heavily weights the LC"
It is unclear precisely how this will effect the points for the medical courses, but as medicine is a restricted course with a known number of placements, along with very high LC points being also historically limited, prehaps we can try extrapolate from the known data for next year, under the New System.
Galway is usually in less demand, so I'm conjecturing a 705 = 625 + 80 ~ 0.5SD required on the Hpat. UCD and Trinity would likely be more, as they have been historically.
This market would probably be quite useful for about ~500 Irish students who are looking for good bounds on LC Hpat combinations that would likely secure medicine.
More context can be found with a Cursory Google search. I expect only thoes particularly interested in Irish exams or statistical extrapolation to be interested in this question, and would like to hear in the comments ways one could make this question more appealing to more traders.
