The Legend of Zelda franchise stands as one of the most classic in the history of video games, with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild claiming victory in 2017. Many fans would love to see the current installment take the crown this year. However, without undermining the significance of the last TLoZ title, it seems highly challenging for it to secure a win this year (though I sincerely hope to be proven wrong, I'm trying to be realistic).

While the previous title emerged victorious, it competed against games that weren't as impactful and didn't generate the same level of hype as the titles in contention this year. Additionally, The Legend of Zelda is on a relatively niche console, limiting its reach compared to other games with a broader audience. Despite these challenges, the passion and loyalty of the fanbase remain, contributing to the enduring legacy of this iconic franchise.

@GuilhermeRibeirodeSouza Did ChatGPT write this? How is the Switch a "niche console"?

predicted YES

@Kraalnaxx People who play a lot of games, certainly people who give a crap about game awards, mostly do not play the Switch. And for those of us who do, there aren't very many games on the Switch, so it's only used rarely. So the Switch is only really popular among a subset of people who don't play games very much, which in this context, is a niche.

Show announced as December 7, market close updated to reflect that fact. https://twitter.com/geoffkeighley/status/1711071549757817181

As much as I love Baldur's Gate 3, it can be a buggy and frustrating mess. The story is great, and the gameplay is great when it works, but TOTK is a far more consistently enjoyable experience. TOTK is gonna be GOTY.

(it's gonna be so funny to me if I get a reputation as "Baldur's Gate's Biggest Hater" or something considering that I'd give the game something like a 90-to-95 out of 100...)

@evergreenemily Update: I have now run into my third softlock.

predicted YES

@evergreenemily I do think TOTK has the best shot out of any game, especially since Starfield's reputation has been somewhat mixed. My main note of caution is that it seems like The Game Awards likes to be "surprising", (see: It Takes Two winning GOTY in 2021) and by that metric it may seem too predictable to give BOTW the award and then its sequel six years later.

predicted YES

@Kraalnaxx I think TOTK might be the surprise win at this point, TBH.

@jakgnfdaghfjkahg Your conclusion is based on a perfectly rational assessment, but your mistake is that the Game Awards marketing lizards will use the same assessment you do. They almost certainly will not, even as they pretend they do.
