Resolution criteria

This market will resolve to YES if the estimated global human population is officially reported to be 7,000,000,000 (7 billion) or less at any point between the market's creation and December 31, 2034, at 11:59 PM UTC.

The primary sources of truth for this market are:

  1. The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) Population Division, specifically via the World Population Prospects database or its official revision reports.

  2. The U.S. Census Bureau, specifically via the U.S. and World Population Clock or the International Database (IDB).

  3. Any serious sources or any world event that makes this possible. Eg. If Nuclear war destroys the population counters, but I can tell the world population is significantly reduced, this market will still resolve yes.

Resolution Rules:

  • Future projections do not count (e.g., if in 2030 an agency projects the population will fall to 7 billion in 2045, the market remains open). The population must actually be estimated to have reached 7 billion or less at some point on or before December 31, 2034.

Background

The global population crossed the 8 billion milestone in late 2022. As of mid-2026, the world population is estimated to be approximately 8.2 to 8.3 billion.

According to the United Nations' World Population Prospects 2024, the global population is projected to continue growing over the coming decades, peaking at approximately 10.3 billion in the mid-2080s before beginning a gradual decline. For the population to fall back to 7 billion or less by 2035, it would require either an extreme global catastrophic event, an unprecedentedly rapid decline in fertility combined with a spike in mortality, or a massive statistical correction to current baseline demographic models by major international agencies.
