Resolution criteria

This market resolves to the first event among the following to officially occur:

  • Puerto Rico /DC becomes a state: Puerto Rico or DC is admitted as a state of the United States. Resolution occurs upon the signing of an act of Congress and the President’s signature, or upon the expiration of a period allowing for a veto override.

  • Supreme Court expanded: The number of Justices serving on the Supreme Court of the United States is increased beyond nine through federal legislation signed into law.

The market resolves to the outcome that satisfies the criteria first. If none of these events occur by December 31, 2099, the market will resolve to N/A.

Background

The political status of Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, as well as the structure of the Supreme Court, are ongoing topics of national debate in the United States.

  • Puerto Rico Statehood: Various bills have been introduced in Congress to provide a process for Puerto Rico to determine its political status, including statehood. Resolution depends on federal legislative action.

  • DC Statehood: The District of Columbia has sought statehood through legislative initiatives, most notably the Washington, D.C. Admission Act. These efforts face significant constitutional and political hurdles.

  • Supreme Court Expansion: While the number of Supreme Court Justices has remained at nine since 1869, there have been recurring political discussions regarding "court packing" or expanding the number of seats. Any such change would require an Act of Congress.
