The market resolves YES if Verizon publicly confirms that today's outage (January 14, 2026) was caused by a cyberattack or hack. The market resolves NO if Verizon attributes the outage to any other cause (technical failure, software misconfiguration, hardware issue, etc.) or if no cause is ever disclosed. Resolution will be determined by official statements from Verizon or credible reporting from major news outlets citing Verizon's confirmation.
Background
Verizon Wireless customers across the United States were hit by a major outage on January 14, leaving tens of thousands of phones in "SOS" mode and users unable to make calls, send texts, or access mobile data. The disruption began late morning on Jan. 14 and quickly escalated, with more than 170,000 outage reports logged on DownDetector by early afternoon. Major U.S. cities were hit hardest, including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, and Washington, D.C., where calls, texts, and mobile data all failed. Verizon has not disclosed what is causing the outage.
