My "full time life fixer" would have the sole goal of making me an optimally productive alignment researcher. They would likely be compensated with a base rate + a bonus in proportion to my productivity as an alignment researcher.

Until I reach the platonic ideal of alignment research productivity, my life will not be considered fully fixed.

If you think you or someone you know would be a good fit for this role, let me know.

If you have arguments for/against hiring someone for this role, let me know.

But why do you need that? Procrastination or stress or sth else? I don't think the prediction is meaningful without reasons behind.

@Alana Your description of what a full time fixer would do looks similar to the kind of help I'm learning to provide. Would you like to have a chat ? You can contact me on Discord via my profile.

@Aelerinya Iโ€™ll reach out!

Have you tried using gpt-4 as a life coach / exobrain?

Any progress with this?

@ian I found a life coach and I am actively looking for an โ€œhuman exobrainโ€ friend/contractor

predicted NO

@Alana That sounds like progress! Lol but what qualifications does a human exobrain need? Sounds a bit like a therapist or a network of good friends that will listen/provide helpful feedback.

@ian The โ€œhuman exobrainโ€ is mostly about improving my productivity by having someone to talk to and brainstorm with when I work. I suspect that working with some degree of social feedback speeds me up and makes it easier to focus. They donโ€™t have to be focused on what Iโ€™m doing, but if theyโ€™re multitasking then they need to be good enough at multitasking to keep some context.

This person needs to be trustworthy and moderately intelligent. More importantly I need to enjoy being around them.

@Alana Sounds like you are going for a two-person approach then, doesn't sound like this would technically qualify to resolve the market as Yes, as it's two people (life coach and human exobrain) rather than one full-time person.

p.s. have you tried phosphatidylserine + omega 3, out of interest?

@RobinGreen Yeah. I'm sufficiently hopeful about relatively cheap solutions like this here that I expect this market will resolve NO unless I find a way to make a lot more money than I currently do.

@RobinGreen I haven't tried "phosphatidylserine + omega 3," no. If you're very bullish about this combo, would you want to offer a bet on whether it improves my productivity? I'm good with 1:5 odds in your favor.

@Alana Note that the two people (life coach + exobrain) almost certainly won't add up to full time (again, unless I get a lot of extra money).

@Alana I'm not very bullish on this combo... yet. I have learned that it makes me like an Energizer Bunny. I have not yet learned to control what I end up doing with all that energy. Maybe I need to apply more willpower. Or maybe I need to cut out artificial sweeteners. Or maybe I need to combine it with the supplements I was taking before, but I'm being cautious about how many supplements I take at the moment.

I think someone who's "full time" with their "sole goal" being increasing your productivity seems pretty unlikely to me. That's just a lot of hours. Hiring a PE/EA for 10 hours a week, who also does stuff for other people, seems a lot more plausible.

I recently took the trouble of hiring a PA to generally clear the distractions out of my life so I could focus on the things I felt mattered.

It has worked well for me, but I have somewhat nonstandard needs in this space. She has been dealing with invoicing and business concerns, and generally handling contractors around the house and setting up power and facilities stuff for another project, helping juggle my calendar across a bunch of organizational lines, and is organizing help and is making sure I don't kill myself ordering DoorDash every day. That is awesome and great and I should have done it years ago.

That said, it takes a while to find the right person and fit and to figure out how to get them enough context to be useful without enough contact to be exhausting.

In my case I happened to find someone whom my wife and I had worked with together a decade or so prior, so I could have her come out and work here around the house without causing my wife to get annoyed at having a stranger around so much during the week. Not sure how to put the sweet spot we found, but its something like "close enough that its not intrusive, but distant enough that them seeing us at our worst isn't completely offputting"?

@EdwardKmett It sounds like that did help to optimise your productivity, but, having thought about these ideas myself, the idea of a "life fixer" seems like a little bit different from a PA - maybe it's a life coach? Maybe it's both a life coach and a PA? Maybe the life fixer would hire a PA for you? It's unclear from the market description.
