Background
The Super Bowl coin toss is a ceremonial event that takes place before the start of each Super Bowl game. Historically, tails has come up 30 times and heads 28 times in Super Bowl history, showing a nearly even distribution as expected for a fair coin flip.
Resolution Criteria
This market will resolve based on which team (AFC Champion or NFC Champion) wins the coin toss at Super Bowl LIX, scheduled for February 2025. The market will resolve N/A if:
Super Bowl LIX is canceled
The coin toss is invalidated for any reason and not re-done
The game is played without a coin toss
For resolution purposes:
The winner of the coin toss is the team that gets to choose whether to kick or receive, or which goal to defend
If the coin toss must be re-done for any reason, the final valid coin toss result will be used for resolution
Considerations
The outcome is purely random and not influenced by team performance or any other factors
The teams that will compete in Super Bowl LIX are not yet known and will be determined through the 2024-25 NFL playoffs
The coin toss winner has historically won 24 Super Bowls and lost 32, suggesting no correlation between winning the toss and winning the game
